I finished the blanket I'd been working on. I'd misjudged when buying the yarn (from 2025 black friday sale) for size son wanted and have two skeins left but oh well. Blanket!

Blue crocheted blanket 45” wide by 60” long give or take
the pattern was "textured groove" and that was very valid, it has a great texture to it. 45"x60" give or take

David Burke died earlier this week. He was the original Watson in the Jeremy Brett Granada Sherlock Holmes series. Most of the obits talked about how he brought a competent, strong, true-to-canonness back to the character which I didn't think was quite fair since while Nigel Bruce (Basil Rathbone's counterpart for those movies) was a bit of an audience insert bumbler, H. Marion Crawford's Watson in the 1954 Ronald Howard's Holmes tv show was lovely. That said, Burke's Watson was absolute excellent! Granada!Holmes has the reputation it does for a reason and I loved that the Burke->Hardwicke switch was timed perfectly with Burke's last episode being The Final Problem and Harkwicke's first The Empty House and Burke's Watson had a young, twinkle-in-the-eye energeticness to him while Harkwicke's was more world weary and brokenly gentle which was perfect way to show how the character might have changed post-Holmes' and Mary's death.

RIP David Burke, may his memory be a blessing.

I may do a rewatch of my favorite Holmes' this weekend. Youtube has so much of it: the Rathbone movies, the Howard and Crawford series and, of course, all the Granada episodes. I don't think my favorite version of Hound is up there anymore (Ian Hart's Watson from 2002 with Richard Roxburgh as Holmes) but oh well, lots of other great Watsons and Holmes to spend time with there.

It's been a few days. I have thoughts.

I will preface that I was not in the best head space coming into the finale, so forgive my down-ness.

archersangel: for posts about me (mad men me)
[personal profile] archersangel

the title of this icon on this post is "mad men me" because at the height of the tv show mad men's popularity*, AMC.com had a thing to put yourself in a scene of that era. there were 4-5 settings (an office, a living room, a bar, a bedroom, etc.) and you could put outfits on a figure representing yourself (business attire, casual clothes, lounge-wear, cocktail outfit) and you could have hairstyles of the era (in a few colors). and have a few body types for both men & women (thin, average, heavyset), skin/hair colors, facial expressions, & a glasses (silver or black) option.
at the time i had silver-colored glasses with rectangle frames. but in 2017 i got black glasses with oval-ish frames, so it was not representative of me (i know it's been awhile, but; 1. glasses are expensive & 2. generally my eyes don't change much between glasses purchases).
but now i have silver-colored glasses with rectangle frames once again. unfortunately my eyes did change a small amount, enough to have eye pain on and off. and i may or may not be that age where it is possible to need reading glasses. thankfully i don't need them. but since my prescription is distance only, i have to peer over my glasses to read things that are close-up sometimes.

a small rant )

the case they give with the glasses is a plastic thing with the wal-mart starburst logo inscribed in the plastic & this cheap felt-like insert (that's not even glued in). the cases from 2017 were better in that their cheap felt-like liner was better, glued in, were not just cheap plastic and had a hinged lid. my brother got his glasses about a month ago and he got their bog-standard case.
when i got mine, apparently they ran out & i got a nike case (a brand of glasses they sell) that's bigger, has better lining, with a hinged lid (that is known for snapping down on fingers. i was warned by the one of the ladies that helps fit the glasses & does the ordering process.) my brother is annoyed/jealous, even though we will not be keeping the cases and will use them to protect our old ones when we donate them to wal-mart's/lions club eye glasses for needy people program bin.

These questions were written by [personal profile] pebbleinalake .

1. What do you consider your current main fandom? (This can include hobbies and collecting. Anything you feel fannish about!)
probably star trek (nothing after ENT). because i watch an episode of one of the series now and then on pluto tv.

2. What was your first fandom?
star trek: tos. some of my earliest memories is watching it on tv.

3. Do you have any favorite headcanons or fan theories?
one of mine; vulcans are more likely to conceive a child during pon farr*. probably because of some hormonal thing.

4. Have you ever created fanworks?
just on the old 5 things stargate LJ & the 3-sentence fic-a-thon every year.

5. Are you still active in any old fandoms?
not really. just when something comes up during the 3-sentence fic-a-thon.

*they mate at other times too. when it seems "logical" to do so. mostly to try to conceive. but also to strengthen the bond with their spouse.
